Hello, this is Hidori 😊

Easy Winter Hiking on Hallasan

Last weekend, while it was raining on the mainland, snow was falling on Hallasan.
That timing alone was enough to get me excited—
“This might be the perfect day for snow-covered scenery.”

So I chose one of the shortest and easiest Hallasan routes:
👉 Eoseungsaengak.

Where to Start: Eorimok Parking Lot

Most people begin Eoseungsaengak from the Eorimok side.

  • Address: San 220-12, Haean-dong, Jeju-si
  • Winter entry hours: 05:00 – 17:00 (may vary by weather)

Parking Tips (Very Important!)

There is a free parking area near the Eorimok bus stop,
but you’ll need to walk several extra kilometers from there.

👉 On snowy days? Honestly not recommended.
The Eorimok Plaza parking area inside is far more convenient and keeps the route simple.

That day, access to the upper parking area was temporarily restricted,
so I had to park lower down… and yes, it was already tiring before the hike even started 😅

Pro tip:
If parking is restricted, try looping around once—sometimes the restriction is lifted shortly after.
If possible, aim for the upper parking area, not the lower one.

Parking Fees Update (From Jan 1, 2026)

Hallasan parking will switch to hourly pricing.

  • First 1 hour: 1,000 KRW
  • After that: 500 KRW per 20 minutes
  • Low-emission vehicles: 50% discount

👉 For about a 5-hour stay, expect roughly 7,000 KRW.
Conclusion: After snowfall, arrive as early as possible.

Snowy Trail = Crampons Are NOT Optional ❗

Snow wasn’t heavy, but it kept gently falling—
enough to create icy patches.

⚠️ Bring crampons (ice cleats).
You can even buy them at Daiso in Korea.

I used my old pair from a winter hike in Deogyusan, and I was so glad I did.
I saw hikers without crampons—
they managed going up, but coming down was terrifying.

👉 Even if you’re confident, crampons are a must.
Packed snow + melting + refreezing = hidden ice everywhere.

No Reservation Needed = Perfect for Spontaneous Hikes

One of the best things about Eoseungsaengak?

✔️ No Hallasan hiking reservation required

That alone makes it ideal for:

  • Last-minute decisions
  • Travelers who don’t want strict schedules

Hiking Time: Be Realistic ⏱️

I read blog posts saying round trip: 1 hour.

…Yeah, no 😅
In winter conditions, plan for about 2 hours round trip.

That said:

  • The trail is gentle
  • Kids can hike it
  • But if you hate hiking (like me)… you’ll still feel it 😂

Winter Scenery on Eoseungsaengak ❄️

The snowfall wasn’t intense—just light flakes drifting down with the wind.
And honestly? That made it even prettier.

Fresh snow softly layering on:

  • Tree branches
  • Trail edges
  • Existing snow

Every snowflake landing quietly made me think:
“I’m really glad I came today.”

The early section has a bit of incline,
but the scenery distracts you from the effort.

The silence was especially memorable—
footsteps and voices felt muted, absorbed by the snow.
The whole mountain seemed calmer.

Near the Summit: Subtle but Beautiful

Compared to dramatic rime ice (sanggodae) at places like Yeongsil or Witseoreum,
Eoseungsaengak’s snow scenery is more modest.

But still—
it’s absolutely enough to say you experienced winter Hallasan.

At the Top: Worth Every Step

The summit isn’t very large, but the view?

👉 Instant “wow.”

Fog blocked the full panorama that day,
but when it briefly cleared, the snowy Hallasan landscape was overwhelming—
something photos simply can’t capture.

Yes, my first thought was:
“How am I getting down from here?” 😂
But finishing the hike still felt incredibly rewarding.

Final Thoughts

You don’t need to reach Baeknokdam.
You don’t need a long, exhausting climb.

If you want to feel winter on Hallasan without reservations or hardcore hiking,
Eoseungsaengak is the perfect starting point.

This winter,
try beginning your Hallasan journey right here ❄️🏔️
