When the first news of spring flowers appears, one flower always comes to mind first—plum blossoms.
They bloom earlier than cherry blossoms and give that unmistakable feeling:
“Ah… spring is finally here.”
Every year I try to visit at least one plum blossom spot, and this time I went to Sunmaewon and the Wondong area in Yangsan, one of the most famous plum blossom destinations in southern Korea.
🌸 Why Wondong Is So Famous
Wondong is known for one iconic view:
Nakdong River + railway + passing train + plum blossoms all in one frame.
It’s a landscape photographers love, and after visiting in person, I immediately understood why so many people return every year.

🚗 Transportation Is Actually the Biggest Challenge
Honestly, transportation might be more important than the flowers themselves.
I debated between public transportation and driving…
but in the end I chose comfort and drove there with my Audi e-tron.
Almost every travel guide warns about the same thing:
👉 Traffic congestion and parking chaos during festival season
Even on a weekday before the main festival dates, parking lots near Sunmaewon were already full, and double parking was common.
Coming from Ulsan, it took almost 2 hours to arrive due to the mountain road congestion.
Luckily I eventually found a small park uphill where parking was possible.
🚆 Best Way to Visit: Train
If you want to avoid traffic stress, the train is the best option.
Wondong Station is served by Mugunghwa trains, and during the festival period extra trains and shuttle buses are often added.
The walk from Wondong Station to Sunmaewon Plum Garden is manageable, and many visitors say it’s actually easier than driving.
If you must drive:
✔ Arrive very early
✔ Use outer temporary parking lots
✔ Take the shuttle bus
That combination works best.
🥬 Don’t Miss Wondong Minari
Wondong isn’t only famous for plum blossoms—it’s also well known for minari (water parsley).
During the festival you’ll see many stalls selling it.
Typical price range:
10,000–20,000 KRW per kg
Many people buy it to eat with grilled pork belly. Some nearby restaurants even specialize in minari samgyeopsal.
Unfortunately… I had already eaten before arriving, so I missed it 😭
📅 2026 Wondong Plum Blossom Festival Schedule
This year’s festival schedule caused some confusion.
Originally planned for:
March 14–15, 2026
But due to warmer weather and early blooming, the main event was moved forward to:
March 7–8
Additional special programs were planned for March 14–15, so it may still be worth checking local updates if you visit later.
🌸 Sunmaewon – The Heart of the Plum Blossom Area
Sunmaewon is located at:
1421 Wondong-ro, Wondong-myeon, Yangsan
It’s actually a plum orchard farm, and during blooming season it becomes one of Korea’s most popular spring flower destinations.
The real charm isn’t just the blossoms.
It’s the combination of:
- Nakdong River scenery
- railway tracks
- trains passing through Wondong Station
- fields of plum blossoms
That layered landscape gives photos a completely different feel compared to most plum blossom spots.
🌼 Blooming Status (March 8 Visit)
During my visit:
- Some trees were still budding
- Others were nearly fully bloomed
- Overall bloom rate roughly around 80%
Because of this mix, the scenery actually looked fuller than expected.
But it also confirmed something important:
👉 Sunmaewon is highly dependent on bloom timing.
Some years the festival happens before full bloom, and other years flowers open earlier than expected.
Always check the latest bloom reports before visiting.
📸 The Famous Observatory Photo Spot
The most famous spot in Sunmaewon is definitely the viewing deck.
From there you can see:
- Nakdong River
- railway tracks
- trains passing near Wondong Station
- the plum blossom orchards
Many photographers wait for a train to pass before taking their shot.
A simple plum blossom photo instantly becomes “a Wondong-only photo.”
That’s why the observatory view has become the signature image of this destination.
⚠️ Respect the Farm – It’s Private Property
One important thing many people don’t realize:
Sunmaewon is private property.
Unfortunately, some visitors leave trash behind in the orchard.
Seeing that honestly made me think:
If I were the owner, I might put up a “No Entry” sign someday.
It’s such a beautiful place—we should help keep it that way.
🍜 Simple Festival Food Under the Plum Trees
Inside Sunmaewon you’ll find small food stalls selling:
- noodles
- pajeon (Korean pancake)
- tteokbokki
- fish cake
- dumplings
Eating noodles under blooming plum trees with red plastic chairs around you…
It’s simple, but somehow feels like peak spring travel vibes.
There are also areas with white, pink, and green plum blossoms mixed together, decorative jars, and small props that make nice photo backgrounds.
Busking performances also pop up occasionally.
👨👩👧 Who Will Enjoy Sunmaewon Most?
Sunmaewon is especially great for people who:
✔ enjoy spring photography
✔ want train + flower landscape photos
✔ are looking for a day trip in Gyeongnam
✔ want a light spring outing with family
If you combine it with a train trip to Wondong Station, the whole experience feels more like a complete journey.
Driving only may leave you remembering the parking stress first.
🍓 One Last Tip
You’ll see strawberry stalls everywhere near the top of the mountain.
But once you drive down, even more strawberry farms appear—usually cheaper.
So no rush buying them up top 😉
✨ Final Thoughts
After visiting, it was easy to understand why Sunmaewon continues to be loved as one of Korea’s best plum blossom spots.
It’s not just the flowers.
It’s the combination of:

🌊 Nakdong River
🏡 rural village scenery
All layered together into one beautiful spring landscape.
